It's now a smoother ride to and from Saskatoon thanks to nearly 50 kilometres (km) of repaving on Highway 11 between Regina and Bethune.
"The people of Saskatchewan have made a tremendous investment in their provincial highway system and it's important we protect that investment," Regina Qu'Appelle Valley MLA Laura Ross said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris. "That's why we've invested $12 million to repave this part of Highway 11."
Altogether, 47.5 km of Highway 11 saw repaving. Work included repaving 26.2 km of the northbound lanes from Regina to Lumsden, 9.8 km of the southbound lanes from Disley to Bethune, 6.9 km of the southbound lanes from Regina to the Weigh Scales, as well as four bridges and numerous ramps. Work began in mid-June and is expected to wrap up this weekend.
"With an economy that relies on exports, it's also important that our highways continue to move our products safely and efficiently," Saskatchewan Trucking Association Executive Director Al Rosseker said. "Highway 11 between Regina and Bethune alone sees between 680 and 770 trucks per day."
This project is part of almost 115 km of repaving in the Regina area this year. Other work completed earlier in the construction season includes three segments totalling 32 km south and north of Southey on Highway 6 and 35 km of the eastbound passing lanes on Highway 1 west to Belle Plaine.
"It's all part of 320 km of repaving we're doing province-wide, part of the 1,200 km of improvements to provincial highways this year," Ross said.
