PROVINCE PARTNERS WITH RCMP FOR GARDEN OPENING

Released on August 7, 2012

RCMP Musical Ride to open Queen Elizabeth II Gardens

The Government of Saskatchewan is partnering with the RCMP and the RCMP Heritage Centre for the grand reopening of the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens on Sunday, August 12 at 2 p.m.

Thirty two members of the RCMP's Musical Ride will escort Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield, Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty and City Councillor Michael Fougere through Wascana Centre in the provincial landau on their way to the gardens.

The parade will start at 1:40 p.m. from the T.C. Douglas Building. The public is invited to attend the grand reopening of the gardens outside the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

"There is no organization in Saskatchewan more synonymous with this province than the RCMP," Doherty said. "They are truly a part of our provincial tapestry and it is a pleasure to have members of the RCMP Musical Ride on hand for the opening of the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens."

"This two-day Diamond Jubilee Celebration gives Saskatchewan residents the opportunity to celebrate three significant anniversaries in our province's history," RCMP Heritage Centre CEO Al Nicholson said. "2012 is the 60th anniversary of the Queen's reign, the 100th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Legislative building, and the 50th anniversary of Wascana Centre Authority. We're proud the RCMP Musical Ride will be a part of this memorable event."

Over the last four months the gardens have received extensive enhancements, including paved pathways, new lighting, additional Tyndall stone benches and informational panels outlining The Queen's six visits to the Saskatchewan.

The parade route through Wascana Centre is available on the Provincial Capital Commission website at opcc.gov.sk.ca/leg100.

In celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the RCMP Heritage Centre's "A Diamond Jubilee Celebration" featuring the RCMP Musical Ride will occur on Saturday, August 11. For more information visit http://www.rcmpheritagecentre.com/index.php/general/list/menu_id/140.
