MOOSE JAW BUSINESS FINED MORE THAN $9,000 FOR SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Released on August 2, 2012

Theodore Sibbald of Sibbald Roofing, has pleaded guilty to four counts under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act for failures to utilize a fall protection system, have a written fall protection plan, ensure that scaffold planks were free from defects or that these planks did not span more than three metres between vertical supports. Sibblad was fined $9,800 in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on July 25, 2012.

The conviction is related to an incident which occurred on November 21, 2009. Two workers were injured when their ladderjack scaffold plank broke while shingling a house. During a separate inspection three workers were observed without a proper fall protection system. Six other charges against Theodore Sibbald were stayed.

OHS conducts approximately 4,500 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced, and investigates where workers are killed or seriously injured in a work-related incident. OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection.
