A Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw partner family are homeowners, thanks to a total of $50,000 in funding assistance from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The family received keys to their new bungalow at a special ceremony held in Moose Jaw today.
"As government, we are determined to do what we can to help Habitat for Humanity families to achieve security, stability and a more promising future," MLA Moose Jaw North Warren Michelson said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "As we see today, great things happen when we work together to achieve this goal, one door at a time. This is a part of the Saskatchewan Advantage, where people are willing to support others in need and build stronger communities."
"What another great day for Moose Jaw," Habitat for Humanity Chairman Brian Martynook said. "While Habitat for Humanity's build projects ultimately become homes for deserving families, it takes a community of volunteers, corporations and governments to make their dreams come true. Habitat's mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners to build affordable housing, promoting homeownership, thus breaking the cycle of poverty. Moose Jaw looks forward to the future for many more homes to be constructed."
Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Lloydminster and Nipawin to help build a total of 90 homes across the province. As of March 2012, SHC has advanced $2.35 million of the $4.5 million available to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province to assist in the delivery of 47 homes for families.
Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions. In return, their lives are transformed by the positive experience of working with the Habitat for Humanity community and by the many benefits that come along with homeownership.
