This Earth Day, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) in partnership with the Saskatchewan Outdoor and Environmental Education Association (SOEEA) and the Friends of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, are presenting a variety of entertaining and educational activities from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 at the RSM.
"I'm thrilled that the RSM is offering such exciting programs and activities to our children," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "By teaching our kids about Earth Day and the environment, we ensure that future generations of Saskatchewan residents will enjoy the same advantages we do."
"Earth Day is a time to recognize the importance of our environment and to take part in activities that show we can all make a difference," Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. "To sustain our vibrant Saskatchewan economy we need a healthy environment."
Several activities will take place throughout the afternoon.
At 1:15, 2:15 and 3:15 p.m., children can learn how to draw natural objects such as trees, shrubs and rocks, by peering through windows using a simple view finder. Children have the option to have their drawings displayed at the museum for the rest of the month.
At 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., kids can construct basic bird feeders for their family's backyard and learn about birds by examining their beaks.
There are also ongoing activities:
- Visitors interested in bugs can chat with the RSM's guest entomologist and even check out her bug collection.
- After meeting a bug scientist, guests might want to participate in our bug scavenger hunt. They can search for toy insects hidden throughout the museum galleries and submit their findings to be entered in a prize draw.
- Visitors can also watch paper-making demonstrations, have their faces painted and add their thoughts and ideas to the vision board, a place where they can draw or write about their views on sustainability.
"Earth Day reminds us to consider the environment," RSM Director Dr. Harold Bryant said. "These Earth Day activities are important. They help us promote not only the museum, but a healthy planet."
