The Government of Saskatchewan plans to provide $30,000 to the Saskatchewan Council for International Co-operation (SCIC) to develop a campaign designed to increase public awareness of the Saskatchewan Matching Grants in Aid Program (MGAP).
Administered by SCIC, the MGAP is an inventive approach to raising much needed funding for international development project aid. Funds raised at the local level by international development organizations are matched by the province up to $310,000. This combined funding is then matched by the Canadian International Development Agency. Every dollar a Saskatchewan resident contributes to one of SCIC's member agencies results in at least $4 being spent in the field.
"The MGAP is a responsive and comprehensive program that leverages government funds with community support," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "The generosity of the people of Saskatchewan is well known. By partnering with SCIC to promote the program and its advantages to the province, we are confident the MGAP will help address some of the economic, health care and social challenges that face developing countries around the world."
The program supports international development projects delivered by non-governmental organizations at the grassroots level, creating a partnership between the community and government for international development assistance and global poverty reduction.
The Saskatchewan MGAP has provided more than $370 million in support of 2,000 development projects in over 100 countries since 1974.
The desire to develop a promotional strategy to promote the MGAP in Saskatchewan resulted from a Vision Critical/Angus Reid survey commissioned by SCIC. The report found there is overwhelming support for private-public partnerships designed to provide international aid, but also found residents of the province are generally unfamiliar with the MGAP.
"The Vision Critical/Angus Reid report signalled clear support for international co-operation and development engagement in Saskatchewan," SCIC Executive Director Debra-Jay Albus said. "With the additional support of the Government of Saskatchewan, we will work alongside the province and our membership to promote the value of the MGAP and ensure the people of the province are aware of the incredible impact their contributions have on the lives of people around the world."
The Government of Saskatchewan will launch the campaign in 2012.
