MINISTRY OF EDUCATION PROVIDES FUNDING TO UPGRADE PREKINDERGARTEN CLASSROOMS

Released on September 21, 2011

Students, staff and officials from Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division joined Education Minister Donna Harpauer at St. Mary's school in Yorkton today, to announce funding targeted at upgrading Prekindergarten classrooms across the province.

"I am pleased to be part of a project that enhances the quality of Prekindergarten classrooms," Harpauer said. "Providing high-quality learning opportunities is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan and children entering Prekindergarten should have classrooms that are comfortable and appropriate for their needs."

School divisions were invited to submit their upgrade proposals to the ministry in early 2011. Initially, projects were approved in 14 School Divisions with total upgrades costing more than $1.7 million. St. Mary's is one of 57 schools across the province that received funding to upgrade classrooms, with priority on installing washrooms and enhance safety, programming and children's independence.

"Christ the Teacher Catholic Schools is grateful that our Ministry of Education continues to place a high priority on early learning," Director of Education Darrell Zaba said. "Our students and staff at Saint Henry's Junior and Saint Mary's schools are excited to have an enhanced learning environment."

Since the initial invitation, an additional $788,000 has been provided to upgrade Prekindergarten classrooms in 43 schools in 22 communities. This funding is part of the Ministry of Education's continued commitment to provide students and children with an appropriate, responsive and attractive learning environment that supports continued student achievement.

Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $376.5 million to move forward 38 major school capital projects and 710 additional, smaller projects in schools across the province. This represents a record high investment in school infrastructure over a four year period.
