Leon Delorme of Meadow Lake has been convicted in Meadow Lake Provincial Court of illegal outfitting and hunting and falsifying export licences and was fined a total of $20,300 under The Wildlife Act and The Outfitter and Guide Regulations.
The charges were laid as the result of a two-year investigation by the Ministry of Environment. The investigation found that Delorme, a First Nations outfitter, was unlawfully outfitting by providing hunts outside of his authorized hunting area on First Nations land. These hunts included three different groups of hunters over two years and involved the unlawful hunting and taking of white tailed deer, mule deer and moose. All hunts were with clients from the United States.
In addition to the fines, Delorme received a five-year hunting licence suspension and all seized items were forfeited to the Crown.
"Illegal outfitting and hunting robs the people of Saskatchewan of the benefits of our natural resources and the provincial government is committed to ensuring those who abuse the resource are prosecuted," Ministry of Environment Compliance and Enforcement Director Ken Aube said. "The courts have recognized the negative impacts of these activities and imposed this significant penalty. I am confident it sends the message that Saskatchewan's fish and wildlife resources are valued and will be protected."
