ESTEVAN SPECTRA PLACE GRAND OPENING

Released on September 16, 2011

The people of Estevan and area can now enjoy first-class events at the brand new Spectra Place - a $23.5 million dollar event centre.

The new facility includes total event-level occupancy of 3,664 and features a full service lounge overlooking the ice surface, eight large dressing rooms, a recessed ice surface and a rubberized walking track. The facility is attached to the Souris Valley Aquatics and Leisure Centre.

The federal and provincial governments each contributed more than $5.1 million through the Building Canada Fund - Communities Component. Additional provincial funds of approximately $2.9 million were provided through the Building Communities Program and $8 million was fundraised locally.

"Estevan's new Spectra Place is a welcome venue that will greatly expand opportunities for sport, recreation and cultural activities," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "The provincial government is pleased to continue to contribute to recreational infrastructure projects across Saskatchewan because we know these centres help make our province stronger."

"Spectra Place will provide the City of Estevan and area with a state of the art facility that will allow a year round venue for junior and senior hockey and a host of other indoor sports as well as the potential for regional, provincial and national events," Souris - Moose Mountain MP Ed Komarnicki said. "It is a facility that everyone can be proud of."

"We are very excited about this facility," Estevan Mayor Gary St.Onge said. "It opens up many opportunities for Estevan and the province. We will be able to attract concerts and sporting events for our patrons in an ever-competitive market."

Over the past four years, the Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to have committed a total of $122.3 million for sport, culture and recreational infrastructure through programs such as the Building Communities Program, Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program and the Community Vitality Program as well as working with the federal government to provide matching provincial funding through the Building Canada Fund.

The Building Communities Program, through the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport, committed $74 million for 33 projects within the past four years. The program is now complete and there will be no further intakes.

The Community Vitality Program, through the Community Initiatives Fund, committed approximately $6 million for community infrastructure including sports, culture and recreational projects. This program disburses grants on two program streams: the Small Capital Projects and the Community Pride Events and Milestones. The Small Capital Projects part of this program supports community projects such as energy efficient facility upgrades or playgrounds, youth leadership or Aboriginal inclusion and projects that reduce financial or other barriers to community participation such as wheelchair access to community meeting places.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program, through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, committed $15 million for 145 projects. This program is part of the Government of Canada's multi-faceted Economic Action Plan to ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn.

Under the Building Canada Fund - Communities Component; the Building Canada Fund - Major Infrastructure through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, committed $27.3 million for four projects. These programs advance a stronger economy, a cleaner environment and better communities while addressing local and regional infrastructure needs.
