Construction of a singles housing project was officially celebrated today with a sod turning ceremony in Saskatoon. The project will provide 27 good quality, safe rental suites for First Nations students pursuing educational opportunities in the community as well as for individuals employed in entry level positions.
The project will cost approximately $3 million in total. Of that amount, the Province is contributing about $2.6 million. The City of Saskatoon is providing a capital grant of $266,760 as well as a five year incremental property tax abatement.
"This new housing development represents our government's solid commitment to improving housing availability and affordability in Saskatchewan, and it's a project that fits well within our new Housing Strategy and Action Plan," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude, said. "Having a quality residence such as this means that people can focus on education and employment opportunities right in their own community. We are proud to be a part of such a worthwhile initiative as we continue to strive to increase the supply of housing in communities across the province."
"The City of Saskatoon proudly supports this important housing development in the historic neighbourhood of Riversdale," said Mayor Donald Atchison. "This development will provide good quality housing for First Nations students and help them achieve academic success. Saskatoon is extremely fortunate to have housing providers, such as Cress Housing, who have boldly expanded the affordable housing stock in Saskatoon and work tirelessly to help fill the housing gaps in Saskatoon."
"We are proud to work with our partners to help provide First Nations students with more access to safe, stable housing as they pursue their educational goals," Cress Housing Corporation Board Chairman Tribal Chief Felix Thomas said. "We nurture and support any and all other potential housing solutions geared towards addressing the critical housing shortage facing the urban First Nations community. This project is an excellent example of that."
Located at 315 Avenue H South, the project consists of the new construction of a 27-unit apartment in a motel walk-out style building. The project is being undertaken by Cress Housing Corporation, an organization dedicated to providing affordable and adequate housing for First Nations persons living in the City of Saskatoon.
Last month, the Government of Saskatchewan released A Strong Foundation-The Housing Strategy for Saskatchewan 2011-12, as well as the 2011-12 Provincial Action Plan, which outlines the government's key activities for the strategy's first year of implementation.
