A new six-unit housing project for Métis families is under construction in Yorkton, thanks to $1.7 million in funding from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.
These units will add to 26 units currently being built in the community. In addition, since November 2007, 34 new rental units have been completed in Yorkton and funded by the Government of Saskatchewan.
"Safe, quality housing is a necessity for all Saskatchewan people," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "This project is aligned with a number of priorities that were outlined in our recently released document A Strong Foundation - The Housing Strategy for Saskatchewan and action plan. Helping families in need of housing is our government's ultimate goal, and we are pleased to make that a reality in Yorkton."
The three semi-detached units, located at 94, 100 and 106-7th Avenue North, are expected to be completed by summer 2012.
Innovative initiatives such as the Rental Construction Incentive, the Affordable Home Ownership Program and the Headstart on a Home program support Saskatchewan's growing population and support the goal that housing is accessible to all Saskatchewan residents. In March, the province announced The Saskatchewan Advantage Housing Plan which committed $252 million in funding over the next five years. Since March, the province's investments in housing increased to $310 million with the announcements of the Summit Action Fund, and the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement signed with the federal government.
