The Government of Saskatchewan is working with the City of Meadow Lake to redirect $300,000 in provincial funding to support the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Games Legacy Project.
"Investing in projects such as soccer fields and ball diamonds always pays off by providing places for friends and neighbours to come together," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said on behalf of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson. "This investment is coming from funding for projects that are facing unavoidable delays, but the City of Meadow Lake has worked closely with the Saskatchewan Government and together we have been able redirect $300,000 in time to support preparations for the summer games."
The Legacy Project includes upgrades to the Stampede grounds, soccer fields, the Meadow Lake Aquatic Centre, the baseball diamonds, the Lions Park track facility, the Meadow Lake Civic Centre, the Meadow Lake and District Arena and bleachers for venues. The project also includes a new tennis court facility, soccer fields and a Lions Park outdoor theatre.
This funding is part of the $1.9 million previously approved through the Building Communities Program for Meadow Lake.
The City of Meadow Lake will host the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Games from July 29 to August 4, 2012.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Government of Saskatchewan for their contributions to this project," Meadow Lake Mayor Gary Vidal said. "This funding, along with the generous contributions of our other partners and community members, will ensure that our city will shine as host of the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Games. The work undertaken by the city, host committee and volunteers, with the support of government, truly exemplifies what can be accomplished by working together."
Saskatchewan's young athletes have been participating in the Saskatchewan Games for more than 36 years. These games provide athletes with an opportunity to test their sport specific skills as well as develop and promote individual sports across Saskatchewan.
