SASKATCHEWAN STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM MITACS FUNDING

Released on October 3, 2011

The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to announce $270,000 in funding for 2011-12 to Mitacs Inc. to support graduate student internships through the Accelerate Saskatchewan program.

"Since 2007, this ministry has committed $1,042,500 to support 108 graduate student internships through the Accelerate Saskatchewan program," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "This investment has leveraged approximately $1,315,000 in federal and industry funding to make our investment go further in supporting our graduate students."

Interns will work with private and public sector organizations, developing applied research skills to support Saskatchewan's industry and economy in disciplines such as physical, life and health sciences, engineering and arts.

"The provincial government places a high priority on education for Saskatchewan graduate students to meet the needs of our growing economy and to put our talents to work at home," Norris said. "This funding will support our students with research, innovation and experiential learning opportunities right here in Saskatchewan."

The federal government's Mitacs Accelerate program is an initiative that connects graduate students with real world partners and builds industry interest in funding research.
