A Weyburn contractor, Glenn Nimegeers of Nimegeers Construction, has pleaded guilty to three counts under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act related to a failure to ensure workers use a fall protection system and appropriate footwear; and a failure to ensure all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised. Nimegeers was fined $1,560 in Weyburn Provincial Court.
The convictions relate to a routine inspection of a Weyburn worksite by an Occupational Health Officer in September of 2010. Workers were observed on the roof of a building without using a fall protection system. Two other charges against Nimegeers were stayed.
Injuries caused by falls represent almost 13 per cent of all workplace injuries reported. OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection.
OHS conducts about 4,500 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood, and enforced, and investigates where workers are killed or seriously injured in a work related incident.
