MINISTER THANKS SASKATCHEWAN RESIDENTS, VOLUNTEERS, PUBLIC SECTOR AND CROWN EMPLOYEES

Released on May 27, 2011

Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert today thanked residents, volunteers, and public sector and Crown Corporation employees for their efforts in helping communities prepare for and respond to flooding.

"The spirit of working together was evident in the communities I visited this spring and, I know it was evident in every community impacted by this flood," Huyghebaert said. "Residents worked together and welcomed volunteers, some from out-of-province, to help with sandbagging and other measures to make the work lighter. Despite their own losses, residents helped others cope. Although the hard work is not over, the sense of community that is Saskatchewan will see the recovery and rebuilding process through."

In addition to Corrections, Public Safety and Policing employees coordinating the provincial flood response and recovery, many other ministries, Crowns and government agencies demonstrated real leadership and teamwork in responding to this year's flooding, including the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority; Highway and Infrastructure; Environment; Social Services; Health; Agriculture; Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport; and SaskPower, SaskEnergy and SaskTel.

As communities move into the recovery stage, several ministries have made staff available to help with the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP). For example, the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) has agreed to second Cam Swan, General Manager of SCIC to PDAP to help strengthen its customer service focus. Swan's leadership role at SCIC provides him with the understanding and insight required to make PDAP more responsive to the needs of claimants facing losses from natural disasters. Shawn Jaques, Executive Manager of Field Operations for SCIC will be acting General Manager during Swan's secondment.

Other government employees redeployed to PDAP are assisting with adjusting duties, claims processing, building inspections and a variety of administrative functions.

"Even in the face of the difficult aftermath of this disaster, the compassion and willingness of the people of our province to help out neighbours and strangers makes me proud to say I live in Saskatchewan," Huyghebaert said.
