SGI wants to make sure every motorcycle enthusiast is ready to ride. That's why on June 18 SGI is implementing the Motorcycle Graduated Driver's Licensing (MGDL) program as a part of its commitment to improving traffic safety.
"A graduated licensing program with experience-based restrictions will help new motorcyclists develop safe riding skills, leading to a reduction in collisions, injuries and deaths," Minister responsible for SGI Tim McMillan said.
The three stages in the MGDL program for new motorcycle drivers are Learner, Novice 1 and Novice 2. As riders move through the stages, they will see fewer restrictions until they graduate to an experienced "M" endorsed motorcycle licence.
Motorcyclists who already have their "M" endorsement will not be part of the MGDL program. Those who already have an endorsement 6 (motorcycle learner) on their driver's licence will automatically be placed in the MGDL Learner stage.
"SGI consulted with law enforcement and motorcycle groups to come up with a program that will work for them," McMillan said. "This program will help ensure motorcyclists have the riding skills to keep themselves and other road users safe."
In the past, motorcyclists didn't have to demonstrate any road skills to drive a motorcycle in Saskatchewan, but now they will be required to take a road test to move through the MGDL program. SGI continues to encourage all riders to take a motorcycle training course.
