MORE THAN 500 FAMILIES TO BE HONOURED BY ISC WITH CENTURY FAMILY FARM AWARDS

Released on May 24, 2011

Information Services Corporation (ISC) will recognize 525 Saskatchewan families this spring with a Century Family Farm Award.

The award commemorates 100 years or more of continuous family farming. The family farm has long been one of the cornerstones of the provincial economy and rural life in Saskatchewan. Once this year's program wraps up on June 3, more than 4,500 farm families will have been honoured with the award since the program's inception in 1981.

"Reaching the century milestone of farming the same land is an incredible achievement," Minister responsible for ISC Tim McMillan said. "These recipients are a testament to the dedication and strong work ethic that farm families in Saskatchewan have come to be known for."

Four celebratory events will be held to honour recipients from May 30 - June 3:

  • Saskatoon: Monday, May 30 - Butler Byers Century Hall, Western Development Museum
  • North Battleford: Tuesday, May 31 - Heritage Hall, Western Development Museum
  • Swift Current: Wednesday, June 1 - Auditorium, Credit Union iPlex
  • Regina: Friday, June 3 - The Convention Hall, Conexus Arts Centre

The Century Family Farm Awards are delivered on an annual basis. Recipients must apply for the awards by March 15 and meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Members of the same family have farmed or ranched the land continuously for 100 years or more.
  • The family must live in Saskatchewan and continue to operate the farm or ranch.

Each recipient family receives a high-quality colour re-print of their ancestor's original land grant or title, along with 12 commemorative certificates and either a free indoor wall plaque or cedar gate sign at a reduced price.
