The Rural Municipality of Britannia was found guilty of two counts under The Environmental Management and Protection Act and The Water Regulations for unlawful alteration of its' sewage lagoons without first obtaining a permit and for failing to immediately report a sewage works upset and was fined $77,000 in provincial court in Lloydminster.
The charges were laid as the result of an inspection by officers with the Ministry of Environment on October 29, 2009. The officers observed construction activities occurring at the Hamlet of Greenstreet sewage lagoons. Investigation showed that the RM of Britannia did not apply for or was issued a permit by the Ministry of Environment to perform these construction activities, and in addition did not immediately report a sewage line break.
"It is very important that owners and operators of sewage and water works in our province abide by the regulations under our Environmental Management and Protection Act," Ministry of Environment Compliance and Field Services Executive Director Kevin Callele said. "The Ministry of Environment strictly regulates their operation in Saskatchewan to protect human health and our environment."
Anyone who is aware of or who suspects environmental, wildlife or fisheries violations is encouraged to report them to the nearest Ministry of Environment office or to call the provinces' toll-free Turn In Poachers (TIP) hotline at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 for SaskTel cell phone subscribers. Callers may be eligible for cash rewards through the SASKTIP Reward Program.
