Foreign skilled workers nominated through the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) will now be able to maintain health coverage while waiting to be granted an extension to their temporary resident status by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), which may have expired during the federal immigration application processing period.
The Government of Saskatchewan has approved a policy change that will declare immigrants nominated by the SINP, and their accompanying family members, to be residents of Saskatchewan while waiting for Citizenship and Immigration Canada to process their residency applications. This change will make it possible to extend health coverage eligibility for SINP participants and their families during the wait period.
"We are pleased to now provide extended health coverage to support Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program participants," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "This change will reduce undue financial hardship resulting from medical costs for nominees and their families."
Currently, foreign national workers participating in the SINP whose work permits have expired lose Saskatchewan health coverage eligibility while awaiting permanent residency from CIC.
"Immigration has been, and will continue to be, a vital part of Saskatchewan's growth," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "The SINP is assisting to solve current and future demographic challenges and creating more sustainable communities. As such, we see this change as an important step for facilitating good outcomes related to labour market attachment and settlement and integration for provincial nominees."
The SINP works within the CIC federal program to help the province attract and retain foreign skilled workers. This year 4,000 nominations are expected through SINP.
