MULTIPLE HOUSING UNIT CONSTRUCTION INCREASES

Released on May 9, 2011

Residential construction sites have been busy in the first four months of 2011 according to a report on urban housing starts released today by CMHC. Urban housing starts are up by 42 per cent in the first four months of 2011 when compared with the same period in 2010, the second highest percentage increase in Canada.

In 2011, multiple unit starts are up to 745 units between January 2011 and April 2011, a 138 per cent increase over the same period last year when starts totalled 313.

"The jump in multiple units is definitely a strong response by builders to meet the high demand in the housing markets of our major cities," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "Urban housing demands have been on the rise as our economic activity and population increases. With Saskatchewan forecasted to lead the country in growth this year, I think we will continue to see very strong housing numbers."

Urban housing starts in Saskatoon were up by 66 per cent in the first four months of 2011 over 2010, while Regina starts rose by 40 per cent.
