Safety advocates will be encouraging everyone to make a commitment to safety during North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week.
The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed May 1-7 NAOSH Week. The theme this year is Safety and Health: A Commitment for Life! What's Your Plan?
The goal of NAOSH Week is to focus the attention of employers, employees and the general public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home and in the community.
"NAOSH Week serves as a reminder that safety must be the most important focus for workers, employers and governments," Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. "It is important that we all take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and others from hazards at work and at home."
In Saskatchewan, two luncheon events are being planned by the NAOSH committee featuring keynote addresses from safety advocates.
In Regina, Meranda Yonge will share her story on May 2 at the Conexus Arts Centre. Yonge has over 12 years experience in the field of safety. Her life changed dramatically when her quad rolled, leaving her with extensive injuries and chronic pain.
In Saskatoon, Tom Kishchuk, President, CEO and Integrated Management System Director at Hitachi Canadian Industries, will address the importance of planning for and committing to safety on May 3 at Teacher's Credit Union Place.
Labour Relations and Workplace Safety has partnered with the Workers' Compensation board to form WorkSafe Saskatchewan. WorkSafe Saskatchewan, together with the Government of Canada, Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, Saskatchewan Safety Associations and Saskatchewan Safety Council, promotes NAOSH week in the province.
