GOVERNMENT INCREASES BEER DISCOUNT TO OFF-SALE RETAILERS

Released on March 23, 2011

As a result of the 2011-12 Budget released today, the government is increasing the beer discount it provides to off-sale retailers.

"Off-sale retailers are an important part of Saskatchewan's liquor distribution system, yet they haven't seen an increase in the beer discount since 1993," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Tim McMillan said. "This $5.1 million increase will help these small businesses remain viable and continue to be strong contributors in their communities."

Currently, off-sale retailers receive a discount of $1.10 to $1.50 per dozen based on the volumes purchased. Effective April 1, the discount will increase by approximately 62 per cent (increased to $1.78 to $2.43 per dozen).

There are approximately 450 licensed establishments with an off-sale endorsement in Saskatchewan, 90 per cent of which are located outside of Regina and Saskatoon.
