PREMIER WALL CONCLUDES HISTORIC VISIT TO BANGLADESH

Released on March 14, 2011

Meets with Prime Minister to tell Saskatchewan Story

Premier Brad Wall and his trade mission have concluded extensive and successful meetings in Bangladesh, culminating in a meeting with Her Excellency Mrs. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The meetings highlighted the important and growing trade relationships between these two countries.

Wall is the first Saskatchewan Premier to visit Bangladesh and one of the first Canadian leaders to come to this country in many years.

"The trade figures are actually quite staggering - Bangladesh is Saskatchewan's 8th largest export market internationally, and the value of trade has been growing at an annual rate of 90 per cent since 2005," Wall said. "And exports to this country support more than 2,500 jobs in Saskatchewan, yet it's a relationship that has remained untended for several years. I was very happy to be able to correct this situation.

"The Prime Minister is very supportive of continuing to look for ways Saskatchewan and Bangladesh can address food security in her country, and work on building a network of Canadian specialists and exports," Wall said.

The Saskatchewan Mission witnessed the signing of four co-operation agreements between the University of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Association and Bangladeshi research agencies and universities.

A delegation from the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) in Bangladesh as part of the trade mission also signed an MOU with the Government of Bangladesh to promote expansion of trade relations between Bangladesh and Saskatchewan.

While in Bangladesh, Premier Wall also met with The Honourable Faruk Khan, Minister of Commerce and spoke to the Saskatchewan trade luncheon and evening reception.

Wall also expressed his sincere thanks to Robert McDougall, Canada's High Commissioner and his staff for the assistance they provided while in Bangladesh.
