The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to contribute $25,000 toward the cost of hosting the 2011 SaskPower Windscape Kite Festival in Swift Current which will be held June 25 and 26.
This is an excellent opportunity to highlight our communities and our province while extending the warm Saskatchewan hospitality that we have become known for.
"Our ministry is proud to provide funding to allow for additional children's activities and expanded marketing," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "Events like this increase community pride generate economic activity and enhance our enviable quality of life. They make Saskatchewan stronger and our government is pleased to help our province continue to move forward."
"The Windscape Kite Festival features beautiful handmade art kites, giant creature kites the size of houses, speeding kite buggies, screaming stunt kites and duelling fighter kites," Festival Co-ordinator Shann Gowan said. "This year we will be hosting kite artists and performers from Germany, France, United States and from all over Canada. It has something for everyone, young and old. It is an international event all of Saskatchewan can be proud of. We would like to thank the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport for their ongoing support."
Swift Current expects more than 4,000 patrons from all over Canada and the United States, which will create a lot of economic activity in Swift Current. Organizers are confident that visitors will experience a first-class event.
Activities include children's activities (straw bale maze, bubble station, 'bol' races (races with mini parachutes strapped to the participants back), balloon sculpting, face painting), an exhibit from the Swift Current Museum, product booths (food and merchandise), opening ceremonies with kite tail cutting, a tightrope walker and kite workshops and flying lessons allowing everyone to build and then fly kites.
