THREE SASKATCHEWAN COMPANIES PLEAD GUILTY TO OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY CHARGE

Released on June 23, 2011

Three Saskatchewan companies have plead guilty to charges under The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.

On May 2, 2011 in Moose Jaw Provincial Court, Best Buildings Inc. plead guilty to one count of violating section 116(2)(a) of the OHS regulations for failure to use fall protection. Three other charges against the company were stayed. The court imposed a total fine of $840.

Unger Roofing Ltd. plead guilty to one charge of failure to use fall protection on June 15, 2011 in Saskatoon Provincial Court. Two other charges against the company were stayed. The court imposed a total fine of $840.

Al-Ro Acrylic Ltd. also faced total fines of $840 for failure to use fall protection. The company plead guilty to the charge on June 15, 2011 in Saskatoon Provincial Court. One other charge against the company was stayed.

All of the charges resulted from routine workplace inspections by the OHS Division.

Injuries caused by falls represent almost 13 per cent of all workplace injuries reported. OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection.

OHS conducts about 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
