SILVERSPRING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WINS HEALTHY KIDS SCHOOL CHALLENGE

Released on June 20, 2011

The winner of the Healthy Kids School Challenge is Silverspring Elementary School. Ms. Melanie Sydiaha's Grade 5 students won the fifth and final checkpoint, and the school as a whole won the grand prize by having the most classes registered and the highest point totals collected throughout the school year.

The Healthy Kids School Challenge has encouraged more than 700 students from 83 schools across Saskatchewan to get active and make healthy food choices. The challenge began in November 2010 and ran over the course of the school year. Students involved in the challenge reported close to 309,000 healthy food choices and more than 55,000 hours of physical activity.

"We are proud of what students are doing to be more physically active and to make healthier food choices," Education Minister Donna Harpauer said. "The Healthy Kids Challenge allows schools to make healthy choices creative and fun. It is great that students and teachers are working together toward a stronger, healthier Saskatchewan."

The excited students were awarded with prizes from challenge sponsors including Wintergreen Phys Ed, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Saskatchewan Blue Cross® Push2PlayTM initiative.

As a special bonus, Ms. Andrea Berg's 5th grade class at Silverspring had the most points of all the classes registered. The students received a special invitation from the Saskatchewan Roughriders to attend the pre-season game at Mosaic Stadium on June 17, where they were honoured on the Maxtron.

"Our Grade 5 class is absolutely thrilled with the award of a chartered bus ride to the Saskatchewan Roughrider game in Regina," Silverspring School Principal Arlene Lazecki said. "This was a fun reward for their efforts and ties in nicely with our school initiative of Healthy Bodies, Active MindsTM (HBAM), where we believe that regular activity enhances optimum learning. Thank you for supporting and recognizing our efforts."

The Ministry of Education and challenge sponsors congratulate all students who took part in the Healthy Kids School Challenge.
