A Habitat for Humanity partner family realized their dream of homeownership at a key ceremony held in Regina today. The home, known as "Mountie House," received $50,000 in funding from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), and is the result of a partnership between the RCMP Depot Division and Habitat for Humanity Regina.
"This is truly an example of what the Saskatchewan Advantage is about - making this province the best place to live, work and raise a family," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "Housing is a key part of that vision, and our government is pleased to help Habitat for Humanity create lasting change and opportunity for families in need of safe, quality homes."
"We are very grateful for the support and partnership with Saskatchewan Housing Corporation to deliver affordable home ownership on a scale unprecedented in the history of Habitat Regina, and indeed, Habitat Saskatchewan," Habitat for Humanity CEO Dennis Coutts said. "Mountie House is just one more example of building homes, building hope while engaging volunteers and building closer ties with our amazing community."
Since 2009, the province has dedicated $3.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and Lloydminster to help build a total of 70 homes across the province. To date, funding has provided 14 families with the opportunity to move into Habitat for Humanity homes. An additional 18 homes are currently under construction.
With the cost of building new homes increasing significantly, Habitat is one of the few organizations whose distinct delivery model continues to provide viable homeownership opportunities for low- to moderate-income families. Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions. In return, their lives are transformed by the positive experience of working with the Habitat for Humanity community and by the many benefits that come along with homeownership.
