Future Home of CP's New Regina Intermodal Facility Unveiled
Premier Brad Wall and Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco joined Canadian Pacific (CP) President and Chief Executive Officer Fred Green, as well as other dignitaries in officially unveiling the future home of CP's Intermodal Facility at the Global Transportation Hub (GTH).
The new facility will be located on a 124-hectare (about 300 acres) site adjacent to CP's main line between Regina and Moose Jaw. Initial construction is expected to start this summer with completion scheduled for late 2012.
"Today's announcement by Canadian Pacific is very important for the success of the Global Transportation Hub," Wall said. "The GTH and its transportation logistics advantage is going to contribute to Saskatchewan's growing profile in a world that needs energy security and food security."
Canadian Pacific (TSX: CP) (NYSE: CP) joins Canadian Logistics Services (CLS) in locating to the GTH, which encompasses about 2,000 acres of serviced land. When fully developed, the GTH will comprise a major Western Canadian transportation and logistics centre. The Global Transportation Hub will stimulate provincial economic development by providing enhanced and more efficient access to global supply chains for Saskatchewan exporters and attracting new investment.
"Canadian Pacific's relocation of its intermodal facility to the GTH is an important stage for the GTH and it clearly demonstrates the railway's ongoing commitment to Regina and why CP is such a valued corporate citizen," Fiacco said. "CP is clearly one of the anchor tenants of the GTH, which will attract other potential business to this important intermodal hub for Regina and Saskatchewan."
The GTH Regina Intermodal Facility will replace the existing terminal that opened in 1980. The new facility's footprint allows for a potential of up to 250,000 container handlings per year or about five times the number of container handlings at the 31-year old terminal.
"The new intermodal facility will further strengthen CP's ability to meet the growing shipping needs of our customers and will make Regina a key intermodal location for the company, joining Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver as major intermodal centres in Canada," Green said. "By relocating to the GTH, the new terminal will contribute to CP's commitment to further growth and support economic development in the region as well as competitive access to key North American and world markets."
Intermodal trains move a wide variety of international and domestic products - ranging from consumer products like electronics, clothing and furniture, to auto parts and agricultural specialty crops such as peas, beans, lentils, soya beans and alfalfa.
