KERROBERT CELEBRATES PLANNED HEALTH FACILITY

Released on July 23, 2011

Federal, provincial and local dignitaries marked a milestone in health care during the town of Kerrobert's 100th anniversary celebrations this weekend.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the Heartland Health Region's new Kerrobert and District Integrated Health Centre, to be located at the junction of Highway 21 and Manitoba Avenue on the south side of Kerrobert. The facility will include acute care and long-term care beds, public health, mental health and addictions services, and 24/7 emergency medical coverage.

"The new facility will better serve patients and families. It will include larger, private rooms, new equipment for safer patient movement and transfers, and the convenience of having numerous services under one roof," Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd said, on behalf of Health Minister Don McMorris. "It will also give health providers the updated equipment and communication systems they need to work as a team and to provide patients with safe, seamless and efficient care."

"The Heartland Health Region is extremely pleased to see the Kerrobert Health Centre proceed," Heartland Health Region Board Chair Richard Anderson said. "We are especially proud of the collaboration between our communities, foundation, staff, management and the Ministry of Health. Their hard work and cooperation have brought us one step closer to the completion of this important facility for the residents of rural Saskatchewan."

The new health centre will accommodate 38 beds, of which 30 will be designated for long term care residents. Construction is expected to begin this fall and will be completed within 18 months of the start date.

Kerrobert Mayor Erhard Poggemiller added, "Having access to health care in our rural communities helps keep our young people in town, our businesses expanding and our school viable. The Province of Saskatchewan provided major assistance to this project and made it happen by adapting the funding formula to 80 per cent provincial and 20 per cent community."

Kerrobert, Luseland and District (KLD) Wellness Foundation Chair Stew Seversen said, "The KLD Wellness Foundation, in conjunction with Heartland Health Region, has worked very hard to see this new integrated health facility start. Our corporate partners, municipalities and residents have looked forward to this day. We thank all our stakeholders who made this happen."

Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Gordon Barnhart and MP Gerry Ritz also attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the new facility, which will replace the current Kerrobert Union Hospital and Buena Vista Lodge. The funding is part of the $152.8 million economic stimulus package for health care infrastructure renewal announced by the Government of Saskatchewan in February 2009.
