GOVERNMENT FUNDS FASD AWARENESS AND PREVENTION

Released on July 7, 2011

Agencies that promote awareness and prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the province are receiving $165,000 in funding from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA).

"When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the impacts of that decision are often felt for a lifetime," Social Services Minister June Draude said. "That's why it is so important that we continue to raise awareness about FASD while also providing support to families that are coping with its effects."

The FASD Support Network of Saskatchewan will receive $75,000 from SLGA. The funding will support the development and distribution of a FASD newsletter as well as other resource material focused on parenting and mental health issues related to FASD. The funding will also be used to continue a program aimed at raising FASD awareness among post-secondary students who are studying for careers where they may come into frequent contact with individuals impacted by FASD.

As well, SLGA is also providing $90,000 to the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute (SPI). The funding will be used to help promote FASD awareness and support work regarding alcohol use and FASD awareness among post-secondary students. The funding will also be used for ongoing SPI initiatives such as regional FASD committees and the FASD Speakers' Bureau, which focuses on increasing FASD education among front-line workers, caregivers and professionals.

SPI executive director Noreen Agrey said the continued financial support from government will help raise the profile of FASD in Saskatchewan communities.

"This funding will allow the Speakers' Bureau to continue to spread the message about the impact of alcohol during pregnancy," Agrey said. "The speakers are valued for their FASD knowledge, experience and dedication and share a powerful message with people in communities across the province."
