IMPROVED DELIVERY OF SURGICAL CARE

Released on January 20, 2011

"Made in Saskatchewan" Approach to Surgical Scheduling Ensures Streamlined, Safer Care for Patients

Health Minister Don McMorris and representatives from Prince Albert Parkland and Cypress Health Regions today celebrated the implementation of the Surgical Information System (SIS), which is now fully functional at Prince Albert's Victoria Hospital and at Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current.

"The Surgical Information System is a key part of how we're transforming the surgical care experience for our patients," McMorris said. "It gives health providers the information they need at the right time. It ensures the right equipment and supplies are available. It tracks where patients are in the process. And by doing all that, it allows our health professionals to focus on patients' needs."

The SIS is unique in its ability to exchange data with Saskatchewan's surgical wait list, which tracks all patients waiting for surgery in hospital operating rooms. The SIS automatically updates the provincial surgical wait list immediately after a patient has received surgery.

"The Surgical Information System allows patients to have a more structured and safer experience in surgery, right from the time of booking and scheduling, to the built-in safety components in the operating room," Prince Albert Parkland Health Region Senior Medical Officer Dr. Edmund Royeppen said. "It has also created the opportunity to study current OR performance statistically, and to use this information to build efficiency into both the patient experience as well as managing inventory cost effectively. Provincial roll-out of the Surgical Information System will be an important step in achieving a sooner, safer and smarter surgical experience for our patients."

"This is a great step for our region in using technology to improve the care we provide to our patients," Cypress Health Region Surgical Services Manager Crystal Hope said. "We have an incredible team that works hard every day to provide the safest and most pleasant surgical experience possible for all of our patients. This represents a concerted effort by all on a vast project; it is a great example of everybody working together for the betterment of patient care."

Other health regions are in the process of introducing the system. In early 2011, Prairie North Health Region is expected to be the next region to complete implementation.

The Surgical Information System is a part of the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative. Among its goals is reducing surgical wait times for all patients to a maximum of three months by 2014.
