SASKATOON AREA COMPANY FINED UNDER THE CLEAN AIR ACT

Released on January 18, 2011

A Saskatoon area company has been fined under the province's The Clean Air Act for causing pollution by illegally burning materials.

FRP Manufacturing Inc., was fined $42,000. The fine included a $14,000 donation to the Western States Project, an alliance of provincial and state regulatory and law enforcement agencies, to fund environmental enforcement training for Saskatchewan government staff.

The charge was laid as the result of an incident related to the burning of fiberglass that was reported to the Ministry of Environment in 2009. An investigation determined that FRP Manufacturing was responsible for the incident and they were subsequently charged and issued an Environmental Protection Order to clean up the burned fiberglass. The company is required to submit a Corrective Action Plan for the proper disposal of the residual burned debris and Ministry of Environment staff are monitoring the work.

"Although the overall quality of the air in Saskatchewan is excellent, deliberately polluting the air affects the environment and human health," Ministry of Environment's Compliance and Field Services Executive Director Kevin Callele said. "It is important to ensure that companies and individuals understand that violations of this nature are serious and will be dealt with accordingly."

Anyone who is aware of or who suspects environmental, fisheries or wildlife violations is encouraged to report them to the nearest Ministry of Environment office or to call the province's toll-free Turn In Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 for SaskTel cell phone subscribers. Callers may be eligible for cash rewards through the SASKTIP Reward Program.
