YOUTH PEER HOMES OPEN IN YORKTON

Released on February 24, 2011

Ten young people at risk of becoming homeless in the Yorkton area will be able to live in affordable housing with access to on-site mentoring, following the grand opening today of two peer homes for youth, ages 16 to 19, in that community.

In partnership with the Ministry of Social Services and the City of Yorkton, the homes are an initiative of Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth Inc., a community-based organization that addresses at-risk youth and homelessness.

"Our government commends the tremendous efforts of Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth, its volunteers and staff, in seeing this important project through to fruition," Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "The province is pleased to support this project, both through annual operating funding provided by the Ministry of Social Services and through capital funding provided by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation."

The capital costs of the project totalled $854,000, consisting of a $773,000 forgivable loan from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, a $51,000 land contribution from the City of Yorkton, and $30,000 from Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth. In addition, the Ministry of Social Services has committed to provide Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth with nearly $467,000 in annual operating funding for the two homes.

"The development of the Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth is more than just a roof overhead," Yorkton Mayor James Wilson said. "Through the hard work of volunteers and government partnership, these homes are a community doorway of opportunity for youth. As a community, we have to be responsible and willing to reach out and help as today's environment can be problematic and challenging for our youth. Transitional Homes is a reputable program that will provide mentoring for the youth to make healthy life choices."

"On behalf of the many volunteers who contributed to this project over the past three years, we are elated that these two peer homes are now ready for occupants and we can begin helping at-risk youth in our community," Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth Inc. President Judy Hughes said. "It is because of these dedicated volunteers and our partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Yorkton all coming together that we are able to provide at-risk youth in the Yorkton area with access to affordable housing, education and training opportunities, and on-site mentoring in a peer environment."

Five young people will reside at each of the two homes, which will become operational on March 1. One home is for male at-risk youth, the other for female at-risk youth. Each six-bedroom home will also house a mentor, who will coach and support the young residents.
