The provincial government is providing additional funding to a key primary health care initiative in Saskatoon to help ensure inner-city residents will have access to a variety of health and dental services. A one-time grant of $250,000 will help Saskatoon Community Clinic cover costs associated with the relocation and expansion of its Westside Clinic location.
The Westside Clinic is an important provider of primary health care to residents of Saskatoon and surrounding area. It moved to its new location at 1528-20th Street West in May 2010. Community clinics operate independently of regional health authorities and are funded directly by the Ministry of Health.
"The Westside Clinic provides an invaluable service to the residents of inner-city Saskatoon," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "This funding ensures that the Clinic can continue to do its tremendous work within the community."
Thanks to a partnership with the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority, the Westside Clinic also offers part-time midwifery, positive living, and mental health and addiction services. In addition, the Clinic partners with the University of Saskatchewan Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine, and the Saskatoon Health Region in providing clinical education experience for undergraduate students and enhanced access to services for under-served populations. The Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health (SWITCH) is a student driven wellness initiative that operates out of the Westside Clinic that provides creative educational experiences for health sciences students while delivering clinical, educational and social programs to underserved residents on Saskatoon's west side.
"The Saskatoon Community Clinic is very grateful for the $250,000 grant that will assist us with the capital cost of our newly relocated Westside Clinic," Saskatoon Community Clinic Administrator Patrick Lapointe said. "The grant will allow us to spend operating funds on service delivery rather than mortgage payments. Financial assistance from the ministry over the past two years has enabled our co-operative to purchase and renovate a larger facility and expand programming at our Westside Clinic, and also improve our ability to partner with other agencies in delivering services."
In addition to the Westside Clinic, the Saskatoon Community Clinic operates the Main Community Clinic at 455 Second Avenue North in Saskatoon.
