The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed February 21-27 as Heritage Week in the province and there are a number of exciting activities planned.
"Each year, Heritage Week provides an occasion for the people of Saskatchewan to take part in activities that remind us of our province's unique history," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchison said. "I encourage everyone to celebrate our shared heritage and consider how it can be protected and passed on to future generations."
This year the main Heritage Week events are in Regina, starting with a public lecture by Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart. Dr. Barnhart will speak about the history and significance of two of Saskatchewan's great heritage treasures, the Legislative Building and Government House which is celebrating its 120th Anniversary this year. A second event is a day-long workshop on cultural planning for municipal officials which will focus on the valuable role culture and heritage play in building vibrant, prosperous communities.
The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport is working with the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, Heritage Saskatchewan, SaskCulture, the Architectural Heritage Society of Saskatchewan and the Provincial Capital Commission to mark the week and support on-going stewardship of our provincial heritage.
"Heritage Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and promote Saskatchewan's diverse heritage resources," Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation Chairperson Wesley Moore said. "The Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation is pleased to participate in the official recognition of Heritage Week in Saskatchewan."
Heritage Saskatchewan will be holding its second annual forum and AGM as part of the week's activities. Along with a trade show, there will be guest speakers, workshops and presentations.
"Heritage Saskatchewan recognizes the importance of conserving our provincial heritage resources," Heritage Saskatchewan President Kristin Enns-Kavanagh said. "As the collective voice for the heritage community in Saskatchewan, we look forward to working with our partners and the public to plan today to have these resources for the future."
Provincial support for Heritage Week helps implement Pride of Saskatchewan, the province's cultural policy that was introduced last year and which identifies shared stewardship of our heritage as a primary goal.
