Saskatoon's Dundonald School held an assembly today to celebrate their classmates winning the second checkpoint of the Healthy Kids School Challenge. Education Minister Donna Harpauer and members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders joined the teachers and students to congratulate the winning Grade 5 class and offer words of encouragement to remain active and eat healthy both in and out of school.
"We are noticing a big push across the province to get students and children more active and eating healthier," Harpauer said. "The Healthy Kids School Challenge is just one way we can encourage healthy habits for young people. It also sends the message that having a healthy lifestyle can be as much fun as less active forms of entertainment."
To encourage teachers and students to get involved and get active, winners of each checkpoint receive a $200 gift card from Wintergreen Phys Ed and a Saskatchewan Roughriders prize pack featuring a visit from two members of the team. Each checkpoint is a new opportunity for teachers to register their class.
"We are very proud of the Grade 5 class for winning the second checkpoint of the challenge," Dundonald School Principal Mitch Kachur said. "The Healthy Kids School Challenge is a great opportunity to teach students the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. We also believe that programs such as these offer additional incentives to reinforce what we believe to be an important message for our students."
The Healthy Kids School Challenge runs until the end of the school year. There are still three more checkpoints to encourage teachers and students to get involved and get active.
