A Saskatchewan company, doing business as Robwel Constructors Limited Partnership, has been acquitted of five Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) charges in La Ronge Provincial Court.
The charges related to an October, 2006 incident at Cameco's McArthur River Operation. An employee of Robwel Constructors Limited Partnership died when pressure released from a dewatering line caused the line to recoil and strike him.
The trial took place in October, 2010, and the judge reserved his decision until February 11, 2011. Ina written decision, Judge Harradence acquitted the company on all charges on the basis that the company had demonstrated it had taken all reasonable steps to prevent such an incident.
The OHS Division works to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses. OHS conducts about 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced, and investigates where workers are killed or seriously injured in a work-related incident.
Whether or not an incident results in a prosecution or conviction, OHS works to ensure that the causes of the incident are identified so that effective measures can be taken to prevent similar events from occurring.
