The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has released the engineering report on the Maple Creek June 2010 Flood. Wet weather through April and May of 2010, combined with a severe rainstorm produced record flooding in the Maple Creek area on June 18 and 19.
In order to better understand the causes of the June 2010 flood event that caused severe damage to the town of Maple Creek, the surrounding rural area and the TransCanada Highway, the Watershed Authority and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, jointly commissioned this report to Water Resource Consultants Ltd. The report was presented to the town of Maple Creek and rural municipality (RM) officials last Friday in Maple Creek.
"Since there is potential for above-normal runoff in the southwest again this spring, this report is very timely," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Dustin Duncan said. "The report recommends several actions that will be reviewed and the authority will also work with the community under the flood protection program recently announced by Premier Wall."
Water Resource Consultants and lead author of the report Ray Pentland said the flood resulted from very wet conditions and a rainfall of approximately 100 mm on June 17 and 18. The resulting flood was a very rare event with a peak flow about four times the previous record into Junction Reservoir.
"This was a peak flow likely to occur once every 3,700 years," Pentland said.
The report shows operation of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada diversion works which are located upstream of the town of Maple Creek, lowered the flood peak by an estimated 0.1 metre, as much as could be achieved. Junction Reservoir, downstream of Maple Creek, did not influence flooding in the town but did reduce the flood peak at the TransCanada Highway.
