PROVINCE ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL

Released on February 3, 2011

Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart announced support for the creation of the Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal as part of the national celebration plan for 2012.

"Her Majesty is a unifying figure who has celebrated the achievements of our citizens and has brought us together in shared pride," Barnhart said. "Our Queen is an extraordinary individual, who teaches us about the true meaning of commitment and work ethic; the Diamond Jubilee is an opportunity to celebrate her outstanding contributions to the world and to Canada, as well as the success of our Constitutional Monarchy."

The Medal design was unveiled today by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. He was joined by Prime Minister Stephen Harper who unveiled the official emblem for the Diamond Jubilee and invited Canadians to prepare to mark this important anniversary in 2012. Details about the Medal program and celebration plans will be forthcoming. The emblem and medal designs can be found at www.gg.ca/diamondjubilee and www.pch.gc.ca.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee is the international celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the thrones of seven countries, including Canada, on February 6, 1952. She will be the second monarch in the histories of Britain and Canada to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee. The first was Queen Victoria in 1897.

During her reign as Canadian Head of State, The Queen has visited Saskatchewan six times, including 2005 for the province's centennial.
