ROSETOWN STUDENT WINS FIRE SAFETY WEEK COMPUTER DRAW

Released on December 9, 2011

Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter on behalf of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert presented Fire Prevention Week contest winner Lucas Bell from Rosetown with a new laptop and printer today at Walter Aseltine School. He is the lucky winner of a province-wide draw that was part of Fire Prevention Week.

Fire Prevention Week is designed to help children from Kindergarten to Grade 3 understand the dangers of house fires. It also helps them learn about preventative measures.

"Fire Prevention Week is an important part of raising awareness about the affects of house fires," Reiter said. "Every year in Saskatchewan there are approximately 3,100 fires - 600 of which are residential - and on average, there are 70 fire-related injuries and 16 fire-related deaths each year. Helping young people understand the dangers of house fires is one way of trying to reduce these numbers."

Fire Prevention Week helps children learn about the value of fire alarms and having a family home escape plan. It also helps them learn not to play with matches or lighters, not to put foil or metal objects into a microwave, not to put clothes, blankets or toys near a heater and to make sure that appliances such as toasters and kettles are turned off or unplugged when not in use.

Lucas's win also helps his fellow students. The Walter Aseltine School gets $400 for extra school supplies.
