The province is one step closer to meeting the over-crowding challenge at the Pine Grove Provincial Correctional Centre in Prince Albert, the province's only secure correctional centre for women.
Today the Minister of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert and Minister of Government Services, Laura Ross attended the sod turing to mark the official start of the construction of a new building within the existing perimeter of the Pine Grove facility. The new building will have 30 cells and will be able to house 60 women.
"Breaking ground on this project ensures that we can continue to maintain the safety of staff, visitors and our inmates," Huyghebaert said. "The addition of this building will most certainly ease pressures on the existing Pine Grove facility."
The Pine Grove Provincial Correctional Centre was built in the 1960's to house 60 female inmates. Currently, the average daily inmate count is 120. This new building will enable the ministry to better manage current inmate counts.
"In addition to increasing space, our government is also determined to contribute to a greener and more environmentally-friendly province," Ross said. "This is why we felt it key to incorporate the standards of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in this project. The building will be more energy efficient and will have better insulation and other environmentally-friendly features."
The government has already committed $7 million in the 2011-12 fiscal year. The other $5 million will be put forward during the 2012-13 fiscal year. This building will cost $12 million over two years and completion is scheduled for March 2013.
