The North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) has been in existence in Saskatchewan for 25 years. To celebrate the successes and accomplishments of this milestone, Saskatchewan Environment Minister Dustin Duncan and various members of the NAWMP, today celebrated a project dedication on the Kehiew habitat conservation property near Avonlea.
"The Saskatchewan NAWMP partnership is an unprecedented success," Duncan said. "It has allowed conservation and agriculture to work together toward sustainable land management and has resulted in numerous programs to involve private landowners in cooperative land stewardship."
Seven agencies including Saskatchewan Watershed Authority, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Environment Canada, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment and Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture work together through the Saskatchewan NAWMP partnership to achieve common goals set out within the Saskatchewan implementation plan.
"We are very pleased to be celebrating 25 years of strong partnership," said the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment. "Our government will continue our leadership on the conservation of wetlands and ensure all Canadians enjoy the social, environmental and economic benefits today and in the future."
"The fact that Saskatchewan is home to a significant nesting bird population has been key to the overall success of the NAWMP," Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Vice President of Corporate Services Bob Charles said. "The waterfowl management plan helps land managers to improve and restore the nesting bird habitat found in our province."
"Over the past 25 years, the NAWMP partnership has played a vital role in bringing together our agencies and providing critical resources for habitat conservation and sustainable agriculture programs in Saskatchewan," Ducks Unlimited Canada's provincial manager of operations in Saskatchewan Brent Kennedy said. "Our achievements today are thanks to the hard work and collaboration of the NAWMP partners together with our partners on the landscape."
Through the collective work of the NAWMP partners, over two million acres of land have been secured in Saskatchewan and another million acres have been influenced through stewardship programs under the NAWMP.
