SHORELINE REHABILITATION AT ELBOW HARBOUR RECREATION SITE

Released on August 23, 2011

The shoreline at Elbow Harbour Recreation Site is getting a little help to protect itself from the elements. The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport has awarded a contract to Allan Construction of Saskatoon to stabilize the shoreline of the popular recreation site.

The marina, found at the southern end of the Recreation Site, is located in a natural harbour that is protected by a point of land. Over several decades, high winds and water levels along Lake Diefenbaker have caused extensive shoreline erosion to the harbour point and adjacent shoreline.

"The marina and Elbow Harbour Recreation Site are among the most popular areas for water recreation in southern Saskatchewan," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "Our government is dedicated to investing in this important infrastructure, while protecting the safety of the public and ensuring a first class experience for visitors."

The contract is for the installation of a "Riprap" armouring system along 330 metres of shoreline. Similar shoreline armouring systems have been used along Lake Diefenbaker and have proven to be very successful.

Work is expected to begin this winter, however, it is dependent on water levels receding enough to allow the work to take place.

This work fits in with the government's goal of improving our provincial parks and recreation sites. Over the last four years government has invested $33 million into the park system, including adding electrical service to more than 1,000 campsites, replacing or upgrading some service centres, boat launches, potable water systems and replacing some picnic tables and barbeques.
