OWNER OF SASKATOON’S SUNBIRD ENTERPRISES PLEADS GUILTY TO LABOUR STANDARDS VIOLATIONS

Marinel Manzuc, doing business as Sunbird Enterprises in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, pleaded guilty on August 8 to 12 charges under The Labour Standards Act. The company has been fined a total of $5,400. Six other charges were stayed.

The company pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including but not limited to: failure to pay wages; failure to keep and to deliver payroll records for inspection; and issuing an NSF cheque.

The employees of Sunbird Enterprises are mostly temporary foreign workers employed in residential construction. The Labour Standards Division continues to take civil measures to recover wages owed to Mr. Manzuc's employees.

There are 14 outstanding wage complaints, filed between September 2009 and April 2011, and two additional complaints pending.

The Labour Standards Division of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety supports fair and equitable workplace practices through public awareness and enforcement of The Labour Standards Act and regulations as well as other labour legislation. Whenever necessary, violations will be prosecuted.
