ALLAN CONSTRUCTION CO. LTD. OF SASKATOON PLEADS GUILTY TO OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY CHARGE

Released on August 16, 2011

On August 10, 2011 in Saskatoon Provincial Court, Allan Construction Co. Ltd. pleaded guilty to one count under The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act. The court imposed a total fine of $3,200 plus a $1,200 victim fine surcharge.

The charge was for contravening section 263(1) of the OHS regulations (failure to ensure worker in a trench is protected from cave-ins or sliding material by means of cut back or shoring).

One other charge against the company was stayed.

The charges resulted from a routine inspection by the OHS Division of an excavation at 22nd Street and Pacific Avenue in Saskatoon.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety works to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses by ensuring compliance with fair and balanced occupational health and safety standards through education, inspections and, where appropriate, prosecution.

Working in trenches is a hazardous activity and OHS takes a zero tolerance approach whenever workers are found to be working in a trench that has not been cut back or shored to protect them from cave ins.

OHS conducts about 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
