THE DISCOVERY AIR HAWK ONE LANDS IN REGINA

Released on August 15, 2011

Provincial Military Liaison (D.H.) Yogi Huyghebaert is inviting members of the public to explore Canadian aviation history with the arrival of the Discovery Air Hawk One, part of the legendary Golden Hawks aerobatics team Monday, August 15 at the Regina Flying Club.

"Over fifty years ago the Golden Hawks soared across the sky and in doing so brought Canadian aviation to the world," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said on behalf of Minister Huyghebaert. "And thanks to the Discovery Hawk One, a new generation of Canadians will be able to experience the splendour of the Golden Hawks and a bygone era of Canadian aviation."

The Discovery Air Hawk One is a fully refurbished F-86 Sabre fighter jet, finished in the distinctive colours of the legendary Golden Hawks aerobatic team and will be on display between 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. today.

Between 2009 and 2011 the Government of Saskatchewan provided $25,000 to the Centennial Heritage Flight - Hawk One Project for the restoration of the aircraft in celebration of 100 years of powered flight in Canada.

Saskatchewan has played an important role in the development and advancement of aviation in Canada. The province had the first registered pilot in the country, the first registered aero engineer and the first (Regina) and second (Saskatoon) registered airports.

Saskatchewan also has the oldest non-military air medical transport program in the world. Known now as LIFEGUARD, the provincial air ambulance service began in 1946 in Regina. Today the program is administered by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health, and is based at the Saskatoon airport.

The Golden Hawks were formed on March 1, 1959 as the Royal Canadian Air Forces' contribution to the Golden Anniversary of Flight in Canada. Slated to fly for only one season, the Golden Hawks entertained millions of onlookers across North America until the team was dismantled in 1964. Today, their legacy lives on through the Snowbirds and Hawk One.
