RIBBON CUTTING HELD AT NEW K-12 OXBOW PRAIRIE HORIZONS SCHOOL

Released on April 14, 2011

The opening of Oxbow Prairie Horizons School was celebrated today by Education Minister Donna Harpauer, students, staff, board members and community members. The celebration featured a ribbon cutting ceremony and speeches by Minister Harpauer, SRC President Leah Pool, School Council Chair Ian Cushon and Board Chair Carol Flynn.

The Ministry of Education contributed $10 million toward the design and construction of this new school development which is valued at $18.03 million. This includes a community fundraising contribution of $935,000.

The new K-12 school brings students from Oxbow Prairie Heights School, Oxbow Elementary School and Glen McGuire School together under one roof. The school has specially designed space for educational programming that will meet the needs of students.

"Government is committed to investing in our schools," Harpauer said. "The learning needs of students are changing, and Oxbow Prairie Horizons School is built to meet these needs now and into the future."

"This project has been years in the making, and I am excited that it has finally come to completion," Cannington MLA Dan D'Autremont said. "Having everyone in one building is going to create a strong sense of community in the school. It will allow children to build friendships with students of all ages and abilities."

"This new state-of-the-art facility will offer a quality learning environment with excellent programming to ensure success and achievement for students in this school," Flynn said. "We are quite excited about the partnership that has developed between the fundraising committee and the Board of Education. The fundraising committee's efforts led to the enhancement of the gymnasium and addition of the multipurpose room. Both will provide a space for the students and community to participate in a wide variety of activities together."

Government has committed more than $422.5 million since November 2007 to move forward 29 major school capital projects and about 580 additional smaller school capital projects across the province. This represents a record high investment in school infrastructure over a four year period.
