A new video-conferencing system at the Kilburn Hall Youth Centre in Saskatoon is increasing safety and security, while improving the efficiency of the court system.
The ministries of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing and Justice and Attorney General have worked together to develop the video-conferencing system for youth who are required to appear in court, but not necessarily in person.
"The installation of this technology at the first youth facility in the province is part of our government's priority to keep residents safe," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "By decreasing the number of times we transport youth to court, we increase safety among our youth, staff and the community."
"The video-conferencing system will ensure the most effective use of our resources," Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan said. "Reducing the costs associated with transporting youth to court will save time and money."
This video court system has the capacity to link to future video developments in other facilities and regional offices. In the next fiscal year, the ministries anticipate installation of the same technology at the Paul Dojack Youth Centre in Regina and the Prince Albert Youth Centre.
Adult Corrections currently uses video-conferencing at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre and the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre.
