RICHMOND NAMED MOROCCAN HONORARY CONSUL TO SASKATCHEWAN

Released on April 4, 2011

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud on behalf of Provincial Secretary Donna Harpauer joined Her Excellency Nouzha Chekrouni, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco in Canada, today to announce the appointment of Charlene Richmond as Morocco's first Honorary Consul to Saskatchewan.

"Our province is proud of our relationship with Morocco, and I know that with Ms. Richmond's appointment this bond will grow stronger," Bjornerud said. "I am confident that she will do an exceptional job in her new role, representing the interests of both the people of Saskatchewan and the people of Morocco."

Richmond is the co-founder of Richmond Nychuk Law Office, and has practiced family and agricultural law in Regina for more than 20 years.

"As Morocco and Canada explore opportunities to further promote our ties, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Richmond as the Honorary Consul of Morocco in Saskatchewan," Chekrouni said. "We are keen to continue to develop personal, cultural and scientific exchanges with Saskatchewan, our longstanding partner."

Morocco continues to be a major importer of Saskatchewan grown commodities such as durum, wheat and pulses. In 2010, Saskatchewan exports to the kingdom surpassed $100 million dollars.

Honorary Consuls are local citizens invited by a foreign country to represent its interests in an area or province on an honorary, unpaid basis. Currently, 13 countries have Honorary Consuls located in Saskatchewan.

The Office of the Provincial Secretary works with government, organizations, and communities, to provide opportunities to celebrate and promote the diversity, character and achievements of our province and to engage diplomats and Consular Corps who visit Saskatchewan as part of government's strategy to strengthen and build regional, national and international relationships.
