TRAIL FUNDING FOR WAKAMOW VALLEY AUTHORITY AND MEEWASIN VALLEY AUTHORITY URBAN PARKS

Released on April 1, 2011

The Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport is giving two urban parks one-time grants for trail development. Moose Jaw's Wakamow Valley Authority is receiving $40,000 and Saskatoon's Meewasin Valley Authority will get $100,000.

"We are pleased to be able to provide these grants to the Wakamow Valley and Meewasin Valley Authorities to help them expand and maintain the trail system in these important urban parks," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson said. "Trails contribute to the physical fitness of Saskatchewan's people and their enjoyment of the province's communities. They attract tourists who, in turn spend money in our communities and contribute to our economy. Trails also raise awareness of our environment and the importance of protecting our natural heritage for today and into the future."

The Wakamow Valley Authority provides a venue for special events and has a well-established trail system. The grant will be used for trail maintenance and development. During this past fiscal year the province has given Wakamow $152,000. The additional $40,000 brings the total provincial contribution to $192,000. The City of Moose Jaw and the Rural Municipality also fund the Wakamow Valley Authority.

Saskatoon's Meewasin Valley Authority is a popular walking and recreation area that runs along the Saskatchewan River. During this past fiscal year the province has given Meewasin $895,000. The additional $100,000 brings the province's contribution to $995,000. The money will be used on a project to extend the valley's existing 60 kilometres of trail by another five kilometres. The extension is an important step in the plan to connect trails in the Meewasin Valley to Wanuskewin Heritage Park. The Meewasin Valley Authority also receives funding from the City of Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan.
